Billionaire industrialist Manu Chandaria on Friday held a simple marriage formalization ceremony at the Office of the Attorney General in Nairobi.
Manu, who is 90, has been married to Aruna, aged 85, for the past 64 years after wedding in a customary hindu marriage.
Despite their wealth, the event was devoid of pomp and color – with Manu kissing his bride to celebrate the legal process.
“64 (years) is a long time and the only thing is that how comes it has continued. It’s because of give and take from both sides and consideration for each other. Love drives off after a period of time, but consideration of each other always makes life a possibility. She (Aruna) is 85 and I am 90 but she has the last word,” Manu said in a recent interview.
In 2017, then Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai issued a gazette notice , requiring all individuals married under the customary marriage, to register their marriages at the AG’s office at Sheria House, upon which a marriage certificate will be issued.
Previously, marriage certificates were only issued to couples who wed through civil marriages, christian marriages, and Islamic marriages.
