Joseph Irungu alias "Jowie" is finally free.

Jowie was on Wednesday afternoon released from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison after his Sh2 million bail amount was settled.

Justice James Wakiaga granted bail to Jowie after 16 months as a guest of the State. His relatives, however, were not immediately able to post the bail amount.

Jowie's sister Nelius Irungu had invited well-wishers to contribute after the family had only managed to raise Sh80,000.

"We have raised KSh80, 000 so far through the funds-collection initiative. A good part of that money, was raised by Joseph’s friends. Most sent at least KSh100 or KSh200.

"I urge Kenyans to share with us any amount of money, and we guarantee transparency on how the funds will be used. We are not out to con anyone; we are just pleading for assistance.

"Our dad has a parcel of land that can be sold to raise some money which will go towards securing my brother’s freedom. We are waiting for land valuers to tell us how much the land can fetch. We could use that land as part of Joseph’s bond," she narrated.

Murder was the charge

Mr Irungu is the prime suspect in the murder of businesswoman Monica Wambui which happened in September 2018.

The suspect was co-accused with former Citizen TV presenter Jacque Maribe who was released from custody in October 2018.
