ODM MPs on Tuesday made a U-turn on their opposition to President Uhuru Kenyatta to allow 8 percent VAT on fuel products.

In a statement released after a Parliamentary Group meeting chaired by Party Leader Raila Odinga, the MPs indicated that they would support amendments proposed by President Kenyatta when the Finance Bill is debated on Tuesday afternoon.

Opposition Chief Whip Junet Mohamed said that their support for the President's proposal was conditional as they would "only support it for a year".

Earlier on, several Odinga allies  had indicated that ODM MPs would vote against the amendments and vowed to introduce 0% VAT on fuel products.

Among those who were opposed to President Kenyatta's proposals included the party's Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, National Assembly Minority Leader John Mbadi and his senate counterpart James Orengo, among others.
