<p>Netflix's new <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/g29028290/best-true-crime-shows/" id="d187fdd0-ef67-3bc0-a7cf-c1d0509e3df3">  true crime show </a> Unsolved Mysteries asks viewers to submit tips if they have any information about the real-life cases covered, and already, the producers have received a surge in tips, according to the <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/movies-and-tv/2020/7/4/21313572/new-unsolved-mysteries-netflix" id="89a3554e-c503-3449-a972-22b4d3aeab53">  Chicago Sun-Times </a> . One Redditor may have even cracked the first case about Rey Rivera's mysterious death wide open.</p>

<p>The first episode of the series, "Mystery on the Rooftop," covers the sudden disappearance and subsequent death of Rivera, a 32-year-old man whose body was found in Baltimore's Belvedere Hotel. At first, many thought that Rivera had jumped from the top roof of the hotel, due to a hole in the lower roof above where his body was discovered. However, his unscratched glasses and fully intact phone were just some of the holes in that original explanation. </p>

<p>Despite the cause of death left "undetermined" by the medical examiner, police eventually ruled Rivera's death a suicide. His family, however, remains doubtful that he jumped, due to the lack of concrete evidence. </p>

<p>Rivera's wife, Allison, also found a note in their house that included cryptic references to the Free Masons fraternity, cult film director Stanley Kubrick, and the David Fincher film The Game, all mainstays in the world of conspiracy theories.</p>

<p>The Game follows a cold-hearted investment banker whose brother hires a strange company to empty his bank account, drug him, and bury him alive for his birthday (without him knowing)all as a way to make him appreciate his life again. It's a weird movie where everyone around the main character seems to be conspiring against him and ends with the investment banker crashing through a glass ceiling onto a cushion.</p>

<p>In the <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/hj7w5c/stunned_by_rey_rivera_clue_that_no_one_seems_to/" id="e0f38afa-f5ad-3ac9-a99c-fcd17214b886">  "Unresolved Mysteries" </a> subreddit, one Redditor noticed some similarities between the last scene of The Game and the setting of Rivera's death.</p>

<p>"I am watching the Rey Rivera episode on Netflix and what really caught my eye was the note Rey wrote on the day he died and he hid the note behind the computer. It had all these names of actors, his friends and family, quotes from free masons and a list of movies," the Reddit user wrote. "One of these movies was The Game. Immediately, I thought: OF COURSE! There is one big scene at the end of the movie where the main character jumped off the roof (!) of a fancy hotel and goes through the (glass) roof. The similarities to Rey are truly astonishing. The whole movie is about this crazy game that a company arranges that makes you think you lose everything in order to let you appreciate life again. Rey was an unsuccessful movie script writer and maybe he got involved in [something] that tried to imitate The Game in some way."</p>

<p>Another Redditor responded that the letter seems to be the work of someone with mental illness: "The letter really makes little sense at all. It comes off as the writing of someone who was having mental issues."</p>

<p>A series of viral Instagram graphics created by the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/naacp_ldf/" id="ed2c7733-8c32-3717-af20-90992dcb436e">  NAACP Legal Defense Fund </a> detail some of the progress the the protests have already accomplished in five cities.</p>

<p>In Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed, a majority of the Minneapolis City Council pledged to vote to disband the police department, per the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/07/us/minneapolis-police-abolish.html" id="6b00939b-30d5-3d4e-ad57-195327cc07f8">  New York Times </a> . That means they decided not just to defund the police, which would mean taking money away and reinvesting in community programs, but dismantle the force completely, replacing police with trained professionals to respond to different types of calls. Though Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey opposed the decision, the city council has enough votes to overrule his veto power.</p>

<p>In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed to cut the NYPD budget, which currently tops $6 billion, though he has yet to say explicitly how much would be defunded and exactly where that money would go instead. </p>

<p>"Were committed to seeing a shift of funding to youth services, to social services, that will happen literally in the course of the next three weeks, but Im not going to go into detail because it is subject to negotiation, and we want to figure out what makes sense," de Blasio said, according to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/07/nyregion/deblasio-nypd-funding.html" id="5d395000-d073-303b-a205-0e1e54c6abd5">  New York Times </a> .</p>

<p>Last Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that he would be redirecting $250 million from the police budget into health care, jobs and "healing" programs for the city's communities of color, per <a href="https://ktla.com/news/l-a-police-union-calls-garcetti-unstable-after-mayors-comments-calling-officers-killers/" id="f5b6c92b-a044-3375-ae79-68f4dcbfa0b5">  KTLA </a> , a local news station.</p>

<p>"Today we introduced a motion to cut funding to the LAPD, as we reset our priorities in the wake of the murder of #GeorgeFloyd &amp; the #BlackLivesMatter  call that we all support to end racism. <p>On Sunday, Denver banned the use of chokeholds and said that officers will now be required "to alert supervisors any time they point a gun at someone," per the <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2020/06/07/denver-police-ban-chokeholds/" id="a604e458-11a4-3480-a06f-fb69f0e8d340">  Denver Post. </a></p>

<p>"This shows me that a week of protest did more than 18 months of conversation," said Elisabeth Epps, an advocate with the Colorado Freedom Fund, on Sunday. "These things are the lowest hanging fruit. It doesnt demonstrate a commitment to real change. It is not radical to ban a chokehold."</p>

<p>On Friday, Dallas announced new measures to "formally ban chokeholds and any force intended to restrict a persons airway," per the <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/2020/06/05/dallas-police-department-announces-new-policies-after-seven-days-of-protests/" id="8f6c862f-27bc-3822-a04a-f7ebd9995484">  Dallas Morning News </a> , and introduce a policy to "warn before shooting," along with new body-cam regulations. There will also be a new policy forcing officers to intervene whenever unnecessary force is used.</p>

<p>The protests have also led to progress in the George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery cases, plus a new commitment to justice around police brutality.</p>

<p>"In case you don't believe protests work, we've: Increased Derek Chauvin's murder charge, had the other three officers charged, reopened Breonna Taylor's case, reinvested $100 million into communities of color in L.A.," YouTube vlogger Hyram wrote on Twitter in another viral post, "All in one week. Don't ever say protesting is useless."</p>

<p>Furthermore, some of the police officers shown attacking peaceful protesters at Black Lives Matters protests are now facing charges after video footage of these encounters went viral.</p>

<p>In Buffalo, for example, officers Aaron Torgalski and Robert McCabe were charged with shoving 75-year-old activist and cancer patient Martin Gugino on the sidewalk. Gugino <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/05/buffalo-police-new-york-city-protests-303168" id="32a1a10c-1d80-3beb-a0a9-715f61a87e20">  cracked his skull on the pavement </a> and remains in the hospital.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Brooklyn district attorneys office just charged an officer, Vincent DAndraia, in a criminal complaint with misdemeanor assault, criminal mischief, harassment, and menacing after he was recorded shoving a woman to the ground and cursing at her during a peaceful protest, per the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/09/nyregion/nypd-officer-vincent-dandraia-arrest.html?campaign_id=60&amp;emc=edit_na_20200609&amp;instance_id=0&amp;nl=breaking-news&amp;ref=cta&amp;regi_id=77988795&amp;segment_id=30438&amp;user_id=9cdb44b5c0c3263531e334a7b3955955" id="0aaa4636-b9b5-3a93-a78b-3dc360ac5f9b">  New York Times </a> .</p>

<p>While all of this signifies tangible progress, the 2020 protests also signify a shift in public opinion around racism and police brutality. On Monday, <a href="https://cdn.cnn.com/cnn/2020/images/06/08/rel6a.-.race.and.2020.pdf" id="072f7b6e-5c34-3d68-a5e8-4fce778a27ae">  CNN released a poll </a> showing that 84 percent of respondents (who were randomly called, and made up of 32 percent Democrats, 25 percent Republicans, and 44 percent Independents) believed that the peaceful protests are justified. In 2016, only 67 percent of respondents to the same survey believed peaceful protests were justified.</p>

"Investing in our future can be difficult for young people, so 100% of the advertisement revenue this video makes through AdSense will be donated to the associations that offer protester bail funds, help pay for family funerals, and advocacy listed in the beginning of the video." </p>

<p>In order to ensure that the ads generate revenue, viewers must leave the ads running, meaning viewers should turn off any ad blocker they may have and not skip the ads. Amira also suggests repeating the video, which generates additional ad revenue, but only if you click away from the video and reload it. So far, the video has generated 8.2 million views, which translates to significant ad revenue (probably somewhere in the $30,000-$50,000 range, depending on how much the advertisers paid for the ad space). </p>

<p>Additionally, Amira lists several petitions for viewers to sign, including a petition for <a href="https://www.change.org/p/federal-bureau-of-investigation-disbarment-of-george-e-barnhill" id="4e514776-51b7-3fa4-ae1b-81289182dc3d">  the disbarment of George E. Barnhill </a> , the prosecutor handling the case against Ahmaud Arbery's murderers. <p>Brown's story begins in 2004, when she was 16 years old. She shot 43-year-old Johnny Michael Allen, who had picked her up at a Sonic fast food restaurant and offered her $150 for sex. At some point during their encounter, Brown shot him in the head and fled in his truck. </p>

<p>Now, Tennessee law has changed, and it's widely acknowledged that because Brown was a minor at the time, she was a victim of sex-trafficking. During her trial, her lawyers argued that she shot Allen in self-defense, but she was nonetheless sentenced to life in prison. </p>

<p>Long wrote to Brown while she was incarcerated after seeing her story in a YouTube video. "I felt it in my spirit to write a letter and here we are now," he told TODAY. Apparently, Long burned the edges of the paper, and that stuck out to Brown. "So I decided, I'm gonna write him back," she explained. "And then, of course, he was really cute." </p>

<p>They first saw each other after four months of correspondence. "As soon as I laid eyes on her, I was like, 'That's my wife,'" Long said. "...I didn't tell her that she was my wife, but I knew." </p>

<p>And their love is still going strong years later. They recently spent a sweet Valentine's Day together. </p>

<p>And these days, the couple seems to be simply enjoying their quality time together at home, creating funny Instagram posts. </p>

"My husband and I were as surprised as everyone else when we first heard the news because we did not participate in any way."</p>

<p>Much of Murder to Mercy is repurposed footage from a PBS doc by Daniel Birman, titled <a href="https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/videos/me-facing-life-cyntoias-story/" id="913439e8-e37a-38b3-a665-36e82850e23b">  Me Facing Life: Cyntoia's Story. </a> (Brown did participate in that film, but did not authorize Birman's repurposing of the footage for his new film.) She followed up the tweet with a reply, saying, "However, I am currently in the process of sharing my story, in the right way, in full detail, and in a way that depicts and respects the woman I am today. While I pray that this film highlights things wrong in our justice system, I had nothing to do with this documentary."</p>

<p>HBO's latest scammer flick, Bad Education, stars Hugh Jackman as a school superintendent running an $8 million embezzlement scheme, and while the film's premise sounds stranger than fiction, it's actually <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/g27486022/best-movies-based-on-true-stories/" id="9f2500ae-45a8-399e-a8b8-2f242f26b093">  based on a true story </a> .</p>

<p>It all started in 2004, when now-screenwriter Mike Makowsky was in middle school, and his district superintendent, Frank Tassone, was arrested for first-degree larceny, according to <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/09/hugh-jackman-movie-bad-education-scandal" id="f773f2cc-13bf-374a-afb4-c4154f2a4866">  Vanity Fair </a> .</p>

<p>Tassone was a charismatic figure well known in the wealthy Long Island community of Roslyn school district, and though details about his personal life baffled local residents, they continued paying high taxes because their district became nationally ranked, and their kids got accepted to top colleges. </p>

<p>At school, the superintendent ate lobster for lunch and sometimes sat with high school students, led a book club for parents, and welcomed every new student to the district personally. Off the clock, Tassone paid rent on the Upper East Side, spent $2.2 million on trips to the Caribbean, went gambling in Las Vegas a few times a year, wore designer suits, and drove a Mercedesall using taxpayer money.</p>

<p>Plus, according to <a href="https://nymag.com/nymetro/urban/features/9908/" id="8e600d02-97c9-3cd9-a0fe-8fbdf8acfc12">  New York Magazine </a> 's deep dive into the case: "The seemingly monastic bachelor who had an old wedding photo on a shelf in his officeand spoke wistfully of the young woman he married who died of cancerturned out, it appears, to be living with one man in Manhattan while owning a house in Las Vegas with a 32-year-old male exotic dancer."</p>

<h1> Frank believed he should be paid millions for his work.  </h1>

<p>"Frank Tassone was the first person I met in Roslyn," Makowsky told <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/09/hugh-jackman-movie-bad-education-scandal" id="f773f2cc-13bf-374a-afb4-c4154f2a4866">  Vanity Fair </a> at the Toronto Film Festival, where the film first premiered in 2019. "I wanted to write something more personal about my hometown...and this story was ostensibly the biggest thing that has ever happened in it."</p>

<p>Per <a href="https://nymag.com/nymetro/urban/features/9908/" id="d4fb73c4-a3c2-3680-a526-14df69a13321">  NY Mag </a> , Tassone believed he should be entitled to the same privileges as CEOs of private companies with an $80 million budget. "He thought the salaries of administrators should be as high as possible," said Charlie Piemonte, Roslyns assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at the time. "That these jobs had a great deal of subtlety and required education. Hed say, 'Look at the CEO of IBMtheyre making zillions and were making $200,000.'"</p>

<h1> And he wasn't the only one who misused taxpayer money.  </h1>

<p>Tassone wasn't the only bad apple in the district. Allison Janney's character, Pam Gluckin, the assistant superintendent for business, stole $4.3 million dollars, in addition to the million dollars she and Tassone withdrew from ATMs. She apparently renovated her Hamptons house using the money and gave her son a credit card paid by the school district. </p>

<h1> Tassone tried to commit suicide before his arrest.  </h1>

<p>In a new interview with life coach Mike Bayer on <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/exclusive-frank-tassone-true-story-behind-hbos-bad/id1497576248?i=1000472153052" id="95703128-df16-3947-ad6a-a237876e14b5">  The Coach Mike Podcast </a> , Tassone said that shortly before his arrest, he tried to kill himself by taking pills.</p>

<p>The podcast interview was a rare public appearance from Tassone since his early release from prison in 2010. (According to authorities, Tassone repaid Roslyn the $2 million he was accused of stealing, <a href="https://www.newsday.com/entertainment/movies/frank-tassone-roslyn-bad-education-1.44017034" id="5886537f-7740-3cc6-ac32-67b457e9280d">  Newsday </a> reported.)</p>

<h1> The Roslyn community and school district didn't support the making of Bad Education.  </h1>

<p>Though this sounds like a killer movie plot, taxpayers in Roslyn weren't thrilled when Jackman began production on the film in 2018, because they were concerned it would give their community a bad reputation. </p>

<p>"The school district is not associated with the movie or its production, is not participating in this movie in any way, and no filming will be permitted on school grounds," read the districts statement, according to the <a href="https://roslyn-news.com/roslyn-schools-rails-against-hugh-jackman-film/" id="0f5aee5a-3480-3565-ac98-3554a6598427">  Roslyn News </a> . "While the film is purportedly meant to entertain, it's important to remember that what occurred in our school district was far from entertaining. A former superintendent and several accomplices conspired to steal approximately $11.2 million meant for our childrens education. The scandal shook our community deeply."</p>

<p>Makowsky acknowledged while the film is called Bad Education, he was lucky to go to school in Roslyn. "I had an incredible education there," he said. "And I think it's in large part, strangely, due to this man, Frank Tassone, who recruited most of the teachers I had. We were one of the top-ranked schools in the country when Tassone was arrested." </p>

<h1> But Frank Tassone plans to watch the film anyway.  </h1>

<p>"Im afraid of seeing myself portrayed as being a liar and a cheat and a thiefand I was a thief, no question," Tassone also said on The Coach Mike Podcast. Nonetheless, he said he still plans to watch Bad Education, even though he was shaken upon first hearing about the film from a friend. "I just crumbled," Tassone said on the podcast. "I thought, 'My god, I thought this finally was over.' Itll never be over for me. Every day I feel pain."</p>
