Car in Likoni ferry accident finally found, rescuers move to retrieve bodies

Rescue divers working at the Likoni Channel have finally found a car which they believe contains the bodies of two people who drowned after falling off the MV Harambee ferry.

The suspected Toyota Isis was found lying 58 metres - 11 days into the search that has seen the Kenya Navy work with local and international divers.

Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna said divers were able to take photos of the vehicle but could not confirm with certainty that it was the right vehicle.

"At around 2pm, we sent Kenya Navy divers who spotted what looked liked the vehicle we have been searching. They took pictures and we are analysing them to identify the number plates. Ninety percent of the work has been done and the ten percent is just to confirm by pulling up the vehicle to see if it is what we are looking for," Oguna said.

The government spokesman expressed confidence that the identification would be concluded by Thursday morning.
