On February 3, 2019, the MP went public about his cancer diagnosis, saying the late discovery meant it could not be treated but could only be managed.

"I was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer with metastases to the liver.

"The fear of the unknown that accompanies a cancer diagnosis is immense. Cancer changes your life completely," he stated.

Okoth went on to explain that he had opted for chemotherapy tablets taken every morning as a way of managing the condition.
