A new transportation device from Segway -Ninebot (yes, that Segway) is set to make the future look just a little bit more like the 2020 we pictured as children. The S-Pod is a two-wheel, self-balancing transportation pod that can go up to 24 miles per hour. Its actually inspired by the glass-encased Gyrospheres characters rode around in the Jurassic World film released in 2015.
The Segway S-Pod isnt enclosedits open to the world around itbut unlike a Segway, it's seated and operated by what the company calls an intuitive assistive navigation panel. Passengers adjust the pods speed with a knob that controls the center of gravity, shifting the device smoothly so it never tips over. This highly adaptive automatic control system allows for easy maneuvering and switching direction.
Segway is first introducing the S-Pod to enclosed campuses like airports, malls, and theme parks but its ultimate goal is to be offered in cities, an ever more relevant aim with the proliferation of bike share programs and ride sharing through services like Via and Lyft.
So someday soon, you may be commuting to work Jurassic World - style, or like a, we presume, much speedier, Charles Xavier of The X-Men.
