Please be wise and know that this is initial overwhelming attitude and it's not a factor in choosing a life partner.

I never wanted to be a pilot. I always thought it was something for boys, or something a dainty girl like me wasn’t meant to do….Ha-ha dainty. Yeah. Right. Who am I kidding? I was a tomboy through and through, and I have the scars to prove it.

Even so, flying planes was never in my realm of possibilities. While all the other kids knew what they wanted to be when they grew up, all I knew was I wanted to go out and play.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t lazy! In fact, I was getting pretty good grades…though, in an African home you can’t bring home bad grades and expect to survive the beating you would expect to receive!

While everyone had an idea of what they wanted to be, all that ran through my mind was, “what is all this ‘When I grow up’ nonsense!?  Let’s go climb a tree or something. Looking back, I was avoiding the inevitable. So one day, to my absolute chagrin, I was cornered.

There we were, you know, counting stuff in a math class, when the teacher decided to ask the class that awful question I had successfully avoided up until that point. (I was 10 years old at the time). And so it began, thankfully, at the opposite end of the classroom. One by one, every mini-human answered with enthusiasm.

Engineer. Doctor. Pilot. Nurse. Closer. Closer still….Drat! What do I want to be!?!? What am I going to say? Accountant. Teacher. Mechanic. Panic…Mouth went dry. It was almost my turn to answer. And then….I had to say something.

Huh? They were dumbfounded. What the fudgy brownie is this girl-child saying!? (You know, because 10 year olds didn’t cuss)

“Actuary”’ I now said with confidence. I was standing there, smug, thinking, “These children know nothing!” (re: John Snow, Game of Thrones). Truth is, I didn’t know what it was either. My brother had mentioned the term earlier that week and it stuck with me.

All I needed to know was “an actuary is a math guy”, and that was enough. There were only 3 in Kenya at the time, and they were all men!  That guy was planting seeds in my mind. If he couldn’t be an actuary then I would. Broham was living vicariously through this poor toddler-sister-child I suspect.

Back to that classroom. I reveled in their shock and awe. How could she give such a great answer? That’s what I thought they were thinking. Until some bully-child (there is always one of those around) shouted, “She doesn’t know how to say the word ACTUALLY!”. That must have been the loudest roar of laughter I ever heard, from all 41 of my classmates. They really died (of laughter). I stood there, defiantly, and when the laughter died off? I said it again for good measure, “Actuary”. That was my final answer.

Thirteen years later, I was looking for a job to achieve this “actuarial dream”. I got sucked in to doing something I wasn’t 100% settled in. My heart was pulling in another direction but I had no idea where it was pulling me. That internal conflict led to a diabolical conflict on my plate. I took it out on food! I really ate my emotions. They went from my heart to my plate, from my mouth to my hips. And my hips really lied! Chei! Things had to change! First in line? Change professions.

So what DID I want to be when I grew up? Had I grown up? Oh no! Had I failed at this game of life already?? (Insert panic here) So I did the only thing I could as a millennial.

I asked Google. I sense the collective eye rolls from Generation X. Don’t judge me!

“What should I do with my life?”  I got too many vague answers. I needed to get specific.

“What is my personality type” As women sometimes we grow up conforming to other’s expectations, so I needed to answer this for my self  honestly

“Career types for “x” personality”. And the search engine suggested a list.

And on and on it went. I was sure I was going to punch myself in the face if another mathematically inclined career came up.

Cue the angels singing Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah and the light of God shining upon me.

That moment of clarity was short-lived as I grappled with my reality. I can’t afford it. What about the degree I just got? Will my family approve of this career choice? Can I actually do this? Can lady pilots have husbands or children?

I decided to get out of my comfort zone quick, fast, in a darn hurry and figure it out.

The risk was worth it. I was fortunate enough to be a beneficiary of a sponsorship program run by an airline in my country that:

Of course I had to apply for it and seek all the information, it didn’t just magically happen, although it kind of did. This was nothing short of a miracle/blessing/the universe letting me prosper/manifestation of vibrations or whatever you want to call it. I claimed it as my blessing.

I am a woman. I can do a “man’s job” and still be ladylike and beautiful. Your dreams ARE valid, no matter how late they come to you.

However, you must step outside your comfort zone, listen to your heart, believe in yourself and banish all doubt.

You can do it. You are ABLE. You are worth it.

When I grow up

With over 1 billion people, Africa accounts for 16% of the world’s population, and according to Internet World Statistics, over 327 million people on the continent have access to the internet.

Nigeria has the highest amount of internet users on the continent, with over 92 million, Egypt is second with over 48 million internet users while the Kenyan population that has access to the internet amounts to over 29 million users.

With a large amount of Africans having access to the internet, and therefore being able to access news and information, here’s a look at the top 6 Google searches in Africa in 2016.

The African continent was glued for a month during the European Championships as millions searched for the fixtures, results and performances of their respective favoured teams.

With 24 teams competing across 10 host cities and 2.4 million spectators attending an unprecedented total of 51 matches, UEFA EURO 2016 was officially the biggest UEFA European Championship ever.

Almost 300 million visits and 1.5 billion page impressions were generated by the official EURO2016.com website and mobile apps between the eve of the tournament on 9 June and the day after the final on 11 July – almost four times the levels reached during UEFA EURO 2012.

UEFA EURO 2016 also proved hugely engaging on social media, with UEFA-produced content seen by over 3 billion across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

More than 15 million fans followed the competition’s official channels, driving over 70 million interactions.

On Facebook, 195 million users triggered 950 million interactions to make the tournament the biggest sporting event of the year on the platform.

Over 45 million joined the conversation as Portugal beat France in the final, resulting in a record 146 million reactions, shares and comments. The tournament was won by Portugal after defeating hosts France in a thrilling final.

2.  Olympic Games Rio 2016

The Olympics which was held in Rio in Brazil over the summer was another sporting event that dominated the most searches in Google by Africans.

African teams defied all expectations at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, winning a total of 45 medals, making it the continent’s most successful Olympics.

The 11 winning countries overcame obstacles that hindered their progress from the beginning, which saw some countries almost getting banned from the Games altogether.

Kenya (ranked 15th globally) continued with its stellar performance at the games and once again topped the African table after clinching a total of 13 medals (six gold, six silver and 1 bronze), making it the East African nation’s best performance in history.

South Africa came in second with10 medals: two gold, six silver and two bronze while Ethiopia was ranked third with eight medals.

Nigeria was ranked 78 globally after clinching only one bronze medal.

Africans, like the rest of the world, watched keenly the US elections in November.

In one of the most shocking U.S. elections in modern political history, Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton and topped the continent’s google searches list.

The controversial business mogul overcame all odds to first clinch the Republican ticket defeating several well-established politicians before eventually crushing the experienced former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The outcome of the historic elections sent shockwaves around the globe considering the fact that Clinton was hugely favoured to win as was projected by the media and pollsters.

However, Trump won the presidency despite losing the popular vote by over three million votes.

He, however, garnered 306 Electoral College votes which decide the presidency as compared to Clinton’s 232.

A total of 270 Electoral College votes is needed to clinch the US presidency.

Africans also searched for the popular Congolese singer and musician who died at the age of 66 after collapsing on stage in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, during the FEMUA urban music festival on Sunday, 24 April 2016.

Wemba played Congolese rumba,soukous and ndombolo.

Dubbed the "King of Rumba Rock", he was one of the most popular musicians of his time in Africa and played an important role in world music.

He was also a fashion icon who popularised the La Sape look and style through his musical group Viva la Musica with whom he performed on stages throughout the world.

In Wemba's hometown of Kinshasa, both fellow musicians and fans gathered together as a tribute to his legacy. Similar tributes also took place in Paris, London, Brussels and Nairobi.

5. MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA)

In the entertainment scene, Africans also searched and keenly followed the MTV Africa Music Awards popularly known as the MAMAs to find out if their favourite musicians won the various categories they were nominated in.

The award ceremony which was held in October is the definitive annual celebration of African and international talent and achievement.

It recognises and rewards musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on African music and youth culture.

Among the winners at the awards included:

Wiz Kid (Nigeria) - Best Male Artist

Yemi Alade (Nigeria) - Best Female Artist

Patoranking ft Wande Coal (Nigeria) – Song of the year "My Woman, My Everything

The continent has experienced a 7,146.7% growth rate in internet access from the year 2000 to 2015, which is the highest growth rate in the world.

5 top African searches in 2016

A person who is fit is capable of living life to its fullest extent.

Physical and mental fitness play very important roles in your lives and people who are both, physically and mentally fit are less prone to medical conditions as well.

One does not need to go to a gym to maintain his or her fitness. Sitting all day is bad for your health.

But despite all the research that suggests you buy a standing desk or get moving every hour, the reality is that these kinds of recommendations aren’t terribly realistic for most of us.

Luckily, even if you’re stuck in your seat for extended periods, you can still do exercises to stretch and move your body with the simple use of a chair and maintain your fitness.

Here are 5 basic best exercises one can do at home with the use of a chair.

1. Incline Push-Ups

Place both palms on the seat of the chair and walk your feet back to a plank position.

Keeping your body in a straight line between the top of your head and your heels, bend your elbows and lower your body toward the seat.

Pause, then push up through your palms to return to starting position. What it works: Your core, chest, back, and arms.

Benefits: Works obliques and core

How to do it: Sitting in a chair, take your right elbow and twist your torso so that your elbow touches your left knee, while bending forward so you feel your abdominal muscles contract.

Return to an upright position and then repeat, taking the left elbow and bringing it down to the right knee. Work up to 3 sets of 10 reps.

3. Seated Press-Ups

Benefits: Works the triceps, relieves spinal compression

How to do it: Sitting in a chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor, place your hands on the arm-rests of the chair and press down, raising your body off the chair.

Extend your arms straight and allow your hips and buttocks to lift up off the chair. Keep your head lined up over your pelvis.

Allow your spine to “dangle” and unravel straight down, creating space between each vertebrae. Hold this position or push up and down to work the backs of the arms more. Repeat four times if holding; work up to 3 sets of 10 reps if lifting and lowering.

4. Triceps Knee Tucks

Stand with the chair facing forward on your left side.

Then, bend at the waist as you place your right palm on the seat and your left palm on the back of the chair, elbow pointing straight up.

Point your left toe and extend it up and out to the side until your foot is higher than your head. Then bring your knee into the body and place it gently on the chair, keeping your left triceps engaged for support the entire time.

Press into your palms as you extend the leg back out to starting position.That's one rep. Complete 10 to 15 reps before switching sides. What it works: Outer thigh, triceps, core, and glutes.

5. Leg Extensions

Benefits: Works hips and thighs

How to do it: Sit on the edge of your chair with your arms by your sides.

Extend your right leg out straight and flex your foot so that just the right heel is on the floor (keeping your foot flexed engages the muscles in the shins and ankle).

Lift your leg up as high as you can without rounding your back. Hold for 3 counts then lower. Repeat again with the other leg. Work up to 3 sets of 10 reps on each leg.

Benefits: Works the backs of your thighs

How to do it: If you have a chair with wheels, sit and extend both legs forward, toes up and heels on the floor.

Keeping the rest of your body still, press your heels into the floor as you bend your knees and try to bring the chair toward your feet. Extend your legs again and repeat.

If you're in a regular chair, place your heels on a towel on a slick floor (or wear socks), and draw the towel toward your chair.

Straighten your legs and slide the towel out again to return to the starting position.

6 best exercises you can do with a chair

<h1>As wonderful as it feels to get a pedicure and manicure, while you flip through the latest beauty and fashion magazines, salon pedicures and manicures take time and money that you dont always have.</h1>

However, one can save the money and have your own beautiful manicures and pedicures right at the comfort at your home and make your nails look glamorous just as if they have been done at the nail salon.

All that you need is a few minutes and the following basic supplies which are readily available at home:

<ul><li>tub or basin</li><li>soaking salts or bubble bath</li><li>towels</li><li>cuticle oil</li><li>nail file, clipper and cuticle stick</li><li>pumice stone and foot file</li><li>polish -- a top/base coat and color</li><li>cotton pads (neater and more precise than cotton balls)</li><li>foot cream</li><li>nail polish remover</li></ul>

1. Remove Old Polish

It is surprising how many people leave polish on their nails, hoping it will eventually chip away. If left over time, old polish can cause nail discoloration and it is advisable to remove any old polish before starting your pedicure.

To help in this, one can either use acetone and non-acetone polish removers.

2. Soak your feet and hands

After you have removed the old polish, fill a small tub, bowl or basin with warm water and Epsom salts and then sit back as the skin softens and relaxes.

This softens your skin without turning you into a raisin and gives some moments to decadently relax without wasting too much time.

3. Give care for your cuticles

Soften your cuticles by rubbing a bit of oil on them. Push them back with an orangewood stick to get a really nice shape. You can also use this tool to clean and dirt from under the nail. Swipe the nail beds with non-acetone polish remover to remove any oil and moisturizer.

Trim your toenails straight across with nail clippers, then gently file the edges round to avoid ingrown nails. Moisturize the tops and soles your feet with your favorite hand lotion, massaging deeply in a circular motion to increase circulation and reduce swelling.

If you don't have cuticle cream to use on your cuticles, use mayonnaise instead! It will add moisture and protect you from getting hangnails.

4. Don't skip the important base coat

Apply the base coat, covering the nail with a clear base coat or nail hardener.

One thin coat is advisable. This will even out and ridges and unevenness that may still be on the nail, serve as a primer for the polish, help the polish to last longer, and keep the color from staining your nails.

This is the point at which you'd apply fake nails if you like.

5.Spread the nail polish away

Paint on two thin layers of polish, allowing your color to dry completely between each coat. One should the swipe polish down the center of the nail first, then on each side. The key is to make the layers of polish as thin as possible. This aids in longevity and helps the polish dry more quickly.

Angle the brush a little forward, press gently so the bristles spread out a little into a neat curve, and drag it gently and smoothly across the nail to paint it. Do not apply a blob of paint to the nail and spread it around.

Blobs or runs mean too much paint or painting too slowly; subtle ridges should smooth themselves out under gravity (self-level) but very thin spots mean too little paint or too much pressure. Fancy designs can be difficult, so stick with simple if it's important to get a good result the first time.

6. Shine on another layer on top of the top coat

Applying a top coat does more than add shine. To quickly refresh your manicure and pedicure throughout the week, add another layer of top coat. This makes a huge difference as compared to leaving it with the same layer.

7. Leave the polish to dry out completely

After applying the layers of polish, one should just chill and relax as you read your favorite novel or watch your best series or movie.

Resist the urge to apply another coat of polish and for a picture-perfect finish, add a few drops of Essie Quick-E Drying Drops onto the nails.

This is optional, however, it will speed up the drying process a whole lot more
